India Ranks 67th in Energy Transition Index, Making it the Only Major Economy with Accelerating Momentum

India Ranks 67th in Energy Transition Index, Sweden on Top

The World Economic Forum (WEF) on Wednesday released its Energy Transition Index 2022, which ranks 120 countries on their progress towards a more sustainable energy future. India ranked 67th in the index, making it the only major economy with accelerating energy transition momentum across all dimensions.

The WEF's Energy Transition Index assesses countries on their performance in four key areas:

Achieving a secure and sustainable energy transition: This includes factors such as energy access, energy security, and environmental sustainability.

Reducing energy and carbon intensity: This measures how efficiently countries are using energy and how much carbon dioxide they are emitting per unit of energy.

Increasing renewable energy deployment: This tracks the share of renewable energy in a country's electricity mix.

Attaining universal access to electricity: This measures the percentage of people in a country who have access to electricity.

India scored well in the areas of energy access and renewable energy deployment. The country has achieved universal access to electricity, and its renewable energy capacity has increased by more than 50% in the past five years. However, India still needs to improve its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon emissions.

The WEF's Energy Transition Index shows that India is making progress on its energy transition journey. However, there is still more work to be done. The government needs to focus on policies that will help India to reduce its energy intensity and carbon emissions. This will require investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean transportation.

"India's ranking in the Energy Transition Index is a positive sign," said Arvind Mahajan, director of the World Resources Institute's India office. "However, the country needs to accelerate its progress if it wants to meet its climate goals. The government needs to put in place ambitious policies and invest in clean energy technologies."

The WEF's Energy Transition Index is a valuable tool for tracking countries' progress on their energy transition journeys. It can help governments to identify areas where they need to improve, and it can also help businesses to make informed decisions about where to invest.

As India continues on its energy transition journey, the WEF's Energy Transition Index will be an important resource for tracking its progress.
