GE Marine and HAL Partner to Strengthen India's Maritime Defense Capabilities

GE Marine and HAL Sign MOU to Expand Marine Gas Turbine Manufacturing

Bangalore, India - February 14, 2023 - GE Marine and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the expansion of HAL's manufacturing capabilities to include assembly, inspection, and testing (AIT) of the LM500 marine gas turbine.

The MOU builds on the long-standing partnership between GE Marine and HAL, which has seen the two companies work together to support the Indian Navy for over 35 years. HAL has already been providing AIT for GE's LM2500 marine gas turbine, which is installed aboard Indian Navy vessels such as the P-17, P-17A, and IAC-1.

The LM500 is a smaller and lighter version of the LM2500, and it is well-suited for use in smaller naval vessels. The MOU between GE Marine and HAL will explore the possibility of HAL assembling, inspecting, and testing the LM500 for possible installation in future Indian naval vessels.

"We are pleased to have HAL as a trusted partner in India," said Amit Mittal, President and CEO of GE Marine. "This MOU is a testament to our commitment to the Indian Navy and to the Make-in-India initiative. We look forward to working with HAL to expand the manufacturing of marine gas turbines in India."

"This MOU is a significant milestone in our partnership with GE Marine," said C.B. Ananthakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL. "It will help us to enhance our manufacturing capabilities and to contribute to the Make-in-India initiative. We are confident that this partnership will be mutually beneficial and will help to strengthen the maritime defense capabilities of India."

The MOU is expected to be finalized in the coming months. Once finalized, it will pave the way for HAL to begin assembling, inspecting, and testing the LM500 marine gas turbine in India. This will help to boost the Indian manufacturing sector and to create jobs in the country.
