Submersible with 5 People on Board Missing Near Titanic Wreck Site
A submersible carrying five people has gone missing near the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Coast Guard said the submersible, which was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, lost contact with a surface vessel on Sunday morning.
The submersible, called the Titan, was on a dive to the Titanic wreck site when it lost contact. The Titan has the capacity to be submerged for 96 hours, but it is unclear whether it is still underwater or has surfaced and is unable to communicate.
The Coast Guard has launched a search and rescue mission for the submersible. The search area is about 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The five people on board the submersible are:
Hamish Harding, the founder and CEO of OceanGate Expeditions
Chris Tappenden, the expedition leader
Vince Cameron, a pilot and engineer
Erika Anderson, a submersible pilot
Jared Fifield, a submersible pilot
Harding is a British businessman and adventurer who has made several dives to the Titanic wreck site. He is the founder and CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, which offers commercial submersible dives to the Titanic.
Tappenden is a British engineer and diver who has also made several dives to the Titanic wreck site. He is the expedition leader for OceanGate Expeditions' current Titanic expedition.
Cameron is a Canadian pilot and engineer who has extensive experience in submersible operations. He is a pilot for OceanGate Expeditions.
Anderson is a U.S. submersible pilot who has experience in both commercial and scientific diving. She is a pilot for OceanGate Expeditions.
Fifield is a U.S. submersible pilot who has experience in both commercial and scientific diving. He is a pilot for OceanGate Expeditions.
The search for the missing submersible is ongoing. The Coast Guard is using a variety of assets, including aircraft, ships, and underwater robots, to search for the submersible.
The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg. More than 1,500 people died in the disaster. The wreck of the Titanic is a popular tourist destination, and several companies offer commercial submersible dives to the site.
This is the first time that a submersible has gone missing near the Titanic wreck site. The Coast Guard is hopeful that the submersible will be found and that the five people on board will be rescued.
